Engaging the Mind and the Heart

I’ve been surprised by how many folks took exception to my thoughts in My Journey Away From Contemporary Worship by saying that when we sing it should engage our emotions or else it is merely an intellectual exercise and not truly worship.
As a very brief clarifying comment, allow me to say this: I am arguing for songs in our gathered worship that engage the emotions via the mind, rather than simply engaging the emotions by means of the music.

  1. Agreed, good clarification. I got the impression from the original post that your were classifying modern material as predominantly the latter, and suggesting that older work was inherently engaging for the mind. I also think songs that aim to stimulate the emotion over the mind tend to shift the attention to us as opposed to our Creator and Saviour.
